The College of Medicine of Hawler Medical University is the oldest medical institution in Kurdistan region of Iraq. It was established in 1977 as part of Sulaimaniyah University; then became one of Salahaddin University's colleges in 1981. The College then came under the management of Hawler Medical University in 2005.
The period of study in the College is 6 years. Students will be awarded the degree of M.B.Ch.B (Bachelor in Medicine and General Surgery) upon completion of their study. English is the language of instruction throughout the period of study.
Admission to the College is through the Ministry of Higher Education's Central Admission Office. Each year an average of 140 students are admitted. Currently, our college has around 250 academic staff in the different basic and clinical specialties. Students get clinical training at 7 affiliated teaching hospitals in Erbil City.
Our college provides education and training for Higher Diploma students in majority of clinical specialties and some subspecialties; it is also a recognized center for MSc and PhD students in almost all basic medical sciences. For the time being, 70 Higher Diploma, 25 MSc and 28 PhD students are registered and doing their postgraduate studies at the College.
Beginning form the academic year 2014-2015 the college has changed its classical curriculum to an outcome based one. The key features of the new curriculum are:
An integrated body system-based approach.
Integration of clinical and basic sciences
Early patient exposure with opportunity to early stage to develop clinical skills.
A frame work of nearly 100 core clinical problems.
A spiral nature of the curriculum allowing topics to be revisited in more details.
Various educational methods, including small group sessions, problem-based learning, community – based learning, and approaches that encourage students to take more responsibilities for their learning.
Assessment based on evaluating the overall learning outcomes, using a range of methods including written, OSCE and log book assessment.
