Application of Rubric Assessment in Clinical Teaching

The College of Nursing at Hawler Medical University successfully conducted a professional development workshop titled “Application of Rubric Assessment in Clinical Teaching” on Thursday, 9 October 2025. The activity was organized under the supervision of the Dean’s Office, with the primary objective of strengthening faculty members’ capacity in implementing rubric-based evaluation methods within clinical education settings.

The workshop provided a structured and interactive platform for nursing educators, clinical instructors, and preceptors to enhance their understanding of rubric design and application. Participants were guided through the principles of analytic and holistic rubrics, including how to translate clinical competencies—such as communication, safety, technical performance, and professionalism—into measurable indicators aligned with course learning outcomes. presenter was Lect. Dr. Kafia Hashim. 

During the session, attendees engaged in small-group exercises where they practiced constructing rubrics, calibrating scoring methods, and applying consistent evaluation standards across clinical settings. The facilitator emphasized the role of rubric assessment in ensuring fairness, transparency, and reliability in student evaluation while promoting reflective learning and continuous quality improvement.

This workshop formed part of the College’s ongoing commitment to advancing educational quality and aligning clinical teaching practices with international academic standards. Participants expressed that the training improved their confidence in using structured assessment tools and enhanced their ability to provide constructive feedback to students during clinical placements.

The activity was endorsed by Assistant Professor Dr. Vian Othman Naqshbandi, Dean of the College of Nursing, who highlighted the importance of integrating evidence-based assessment frameworks into nursing education.
