  Department of pharmacology

The pharmacology department of the College of Pharmacy in Hawler Medical University currently has 22 staff members.

The field of pharmacology focuses on the interaction between living cells and their environment's regulatory molecules. It aims to prove fundamental mechanisms of molecular and cellular function in order to develop new therapeutic approaches for various diseases. A unique role of the Department of Pharmacology is to investigate the fundamental principles of cell function and translate those findings into clinical applications. A unique feature of pharmacology is that it draws on many fields of biomedicine in order to design drugs, understand mechanisms, and characterize therapy delivery and disposition. Pharmacologists should be able to develop and understand drug/therapeutic function and dysfunction using their knowledge of most biomedical fields.

Mission

The department of Pharmacology is committed to fulfilling its roles in education and research. The department aims at conducting studies on the effects of drugs and other molecules on biological systems with a view to understanding the mechanisms of the human body. Pre-clinical research via animal models aims to examine cellular and molecular pathways in living systems as the first step towards a comprehensive understanding of disease and effective treatment. We are eager to expand our research into pharmacogenomics, proteomics, and molecular pharmacology.

The goal of the clinical pharmacy sub-department is to give students the theoretical and practical skills needed to become sufficiently competent pharmacist practitioners. Furthermore, this department also educates students on the various stages of the healthcare process. This knowledge may be utilized in a hospital setting or within the pharmacy. In a healthcare setting, students are expected to be capable of assessing patients and gathering information via the use and creation of patient histories and medication histories. Furthermore, students are expected to be familiar with the basic treatment guidelines for illnesses. Students will be educated in order to be familiar with the dosages, dosing guidelines, and counselling points for medications. In order to achieve this, students will be given lectures, projects, and practical activities which will be held either at the university or at the hospital.

 Vision

Pharmacists are lifelong learners. Therefore, our vision includes granting students the ability to continue their learning even after graduation. Armed with the knowledge and skills granted to them, students are expected to continuously grow and provide value to the community. Since ultimately, we are releasing future practitioners into the community and pharmacists are at the heart of this community. Graduated pharmacists will be able to improve the outcome from medications and develop the skills necessary to consult and treat patients. In addition, pharmacy students will be able to learn about the mechanism or the mode of action of medications. They will be trained to become the leaders of tomorrow.
