Transforming Textbook Chapters into Comprehensive Academic Lectures: Workshop at Hawler Medical University

Author: College of Nursing,

July 13, 2026

The College of Nursing at Hawler Medical University conducted a professional workshop titled "From Textbook Chapter to Complete Scientific Lecture: Moving Beyond PowerPoint-Based Teaching" at the Hawler Medical University Presidency. The academic initiative addressed pedagogical methodologies in higher education, focusing specifically on the limitations of modern classroom reliance on presentation slides. While digital slides serve as effective visual accompaniments, their simplified format often fails to provide undergraduate students with comprehensive scientific depth. When instructional delivery depends primarily on slides, students frequently miss critical contextual details, thorough theoretical explanations, and primary textbook data. Consequently, the workshop sought to systematically develop faculty competencies in transforming standard textbook chapters into rigorous, structured, and information-rich lectures.

Methodological Framework and Presentation Core

The workshop program provided structural frameworks, analytical strategies, and practical applications for academic instruction. Assist. Prof. Dr. Vian Afan Naqishbandi initiated the proceedings with opening remarks detailing the significance of advanced curriculum design for institutional management and university leadership. Assist. Prof. Dr. Chnar Salahaddin Qadir analyzed the pedagogical deficiencies of slide-dependent instruction and introduced structured methods for critical chapter analysis during lecture formulation. Abdullah Shakir Muhammed presented techniques for isolating core scientific concepts within dense text and established clear guidelines for authoring comprehensive teaching scripts and student handouts. Furthermore, Assist. Prof. Dr. Chnar Salahaddin Qadir demonstrated the systemic transition of textual data into coherent lecture narratives calibrated to the student's academic level. To validate these models, Abdullah Shakir Muhammed provided a practical demonstration by converting an isolated textbook section into a fully developed lecture unit. The session concluded with an academic forum moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Chnar Salahaddin Qadir, allowing faculty members to deliberate on implementation strategies and institutional recommendations.

Educational Outcomes and Pedagogical Goals

The primary objective of this academic exercise was to equip educators with advanced skills in content analysis, logical information sequencing, and detailed scientific exposition. The workshop established that primary textbooks must serve as the foundational source of scientific information, while PowerPoint presentations should function strictly as supplementary visual tools. By promoting a shift from simplified, slide-based teaching toward rigorous, textbook-aligned lecture preparation, this initiative aims to advance instructional standards and enhance the quality of academic delivery across all university departments.
